Our History

In 1969, brothers Robert (Bob) and William (Bill) Smith started the company ‘Smiths General Contracting Pty Ltd’. Initially the company concentrated on small contracts for railway maintenance.

From 1972, the success of the company accelerated as larger contracts were successfully carried out in the construction of railway lines for the coal industry. They then gained the contract to lay the railway track to the Port Waratah Coal Loader.

This success continued, with significant projects being undertaken, including the Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow, NSW, and the replacement of the rail lines after the infamous Granville rail disaster.

Smiths General Contracting had a strong ethos to support employment opportunities for the Aboriginal community. At the height of the company’s success it employed hundreds of people, and over seventy per cent of the workforce was Aboriginal.

The NSWICC Assured program is also aligned with FACCI policy.
